Only disk manufacturers will have access to the firmware. The software is for them to perform low-level disk tests and other functions that help ensure the healthy state of the hard drive. Without the firmware code, it is not possible to communicate between the PC and the hard disk. Most firmware codes are located on data platters and also on the PCBs. When the PCB is damaged, the device will fail.
When this happens, the hard drive turns on but is not recognized by the computer. In case the hard disk is recognized, foreign characters will appear. Other times, the hard drive will freeze at startup.
Bad Platter Area this is also termed as bad sectors. This problem arises when the surface of the platter is damaged due to wear, manufacturing defects, tracking errors, or head fall. When this occurs, the hard drive can still be accessed, but it will take a long time for this. Users will also have trouble accessing files or folders, even if they are still intact.
